As part of CARBON COPY, we planned a playful public engagement called The Glove Box. People were invited to contribute to a short survey about cars, answering some simple questions like “What’s the greatest distance you’ve travelled by car?” and “What’s your favourite road trippin’ tune?” as well as some more challenging questions.
People could contribute online or in person. We spent two days onsite, talking to people and collecting car stories on carbon copy pages designed to look like “damage reports.”
The carbon copies will be slipped into the (literal) glove box of the artwork, creating an informal time capsule of this moment, as it relates to car culture. In the coming years (as cars rapidly change) the answers will change in relation to the surrounding culture.
All sorts of people stopped by to visit, prompting us to stay almost 4 hours longer than we’d scheduled! For some of the answers, stay tuned to this blog!
